POA Pres says the violent incident at the Port of Spain Prison was a riot not a fracas

President of the Prison Officers Association Gerard Gordon says that he was incensed when he heard that the violent incident that occurred at the Port of Spain Prison on March 26 was described as a fracas.

Prisons Commissioner Deopersad Ramoutar has insisted that the incident was nothing more than a fracas.

However Gordon said that he has found that the Commissioner has had a habit of downplaying incidents of this nature during his tenure.

Initial information on the injuries stated that one prisoner died but there were soft tissue injuries suffered by the prison officers.

However Gordon explained that officers’ injuries included dislodged teeth and chunks of flesh taken off of an arm.

Gordon said that he could not speak for the Prison Commissioner and why he chose to downplay the incident.

He said that he did not know whether or not he had been sent to the Port of Spain Prison as a result of speaking out on issues at the prison.
