PM slams Opposition for its remarks on the Guyana-Venezuela conflict

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has slammed the Opposition for its remarks in relation to the Guyana, Venezuela matter.

Rowley, speaking at a media briefing this morning, said the UNC’s call for TT to intervene and mediate in the conflict is very concerning to him. He said the Opposition seems to make a career of undermining our national foreign policy and that of CARICOM.

“Anybody who pretends to want to speak about the Guyana and Venezuela situation, and asking a government, their home government to act as mediators, would know that they are going against the position of the people of Guyana,” said Rowley.

He added, “The people of Guyana are firm in their position…Guyana does not encourage and does not require its problem to be dealt with by any mediation with Venezuela at this time.”

He noted that Guyana placed its fortune in the adjudication of the International Court of Justice. However, he said, Venezuela’s position is they do not recognize that court, so we have to find another avenue or negotiations and dialogue will have to evolve.

He said the opposition should know better and should just shut up.
