Officers involved in extortion matter to appear before PSB today

Summonses were issued over the weekend for the seven police officers charged in an extortion mayyer.

The officers, who are attached to a special unit in Eastern Division, were released last Thursday in the ongoing probe into reports of extortion against Sangre Grande businessmen.

They have been ordered to report to the Professional Standards Bureau of T&T Police Service today.

The seven officers, are part of a group of nine, who were released after pre-action protocol letters for writ of habeas corpus were sent to the Commissioner of Police by attorneys Terry Boyer, Seana Baboolal Adrian Thompson and Fareed Ali last week.

Two of the nine have been charged with misbehaviour in public office by misappropriation of more than $12,000.

The officers charged were Insp Ramlakhan and PC Smith, who appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Cheron Raphael and were placed on $250,000 surety bail. They are to return to court on September 26th.
