New COVID-19 ‘variant of interest’ declared by WHO

COVID-19 was officially ended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) several months ago, but global monitoring still continues and this has led the WHO to declare a new Variant of Interest.

The new variant, called EG.5, is a sublineage of the Omicron Variant of Concern.

Two cases of the new variant have been detected in T&T. The first on June 29th and then on July 13th.

EG.5 was first reported on February 17th by WHO and designated as a variant under monitoring on July 19th.

While the WHO notes with concern the variant’s growing prevalence globally, it places its public health risk as “low.”
