Moonilal slams haphazard gov’t plans to welcome tourists to East POS

Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal has slammed the Rowley administration for introducing measures haphazardly and arbitrarily as evidenced in its announced plans to welcome tourists to east Port-of-Spain.

The Tourism Trinidad Limited (TTL) has agreed to a proposal that would see visitors from cruise ships head to the East Side Plaza and the New City Mall on December 28.

He said, “While introducing visitors to the culture of the inner city of Port-of-Spain would be welcome in ordinary circumstances, the area has been the subject of severe international travel warnings.”

Insisting the Government had been ignoring the crisis in the capital city for over eight years, Moonilal said, “The majority of law abiding residents of the city live in fear of the few while the Government allows the city to slowly die, while also killing the downtown Port-of-Spain economy, which was once one of the benchmarks of prosperity in Trinidad and Tobago.”

Moonilal said that the English Cricket Team which has been staying at the Hyatt Hotel, was also being warned to avoid the streets of the capital city.

Moonilal stated, “With murders now around the Hyatt Hotel and elsewhere in Port-of-Spain, one wonders whether this initiative is ill advised.”
