Lutchmedial: Gov’t creating single mother homes by denying access to bail!

The Government is creating single mother homes by seeking to deny access to bail.

This is the view of UNC Senator Jayanti Lutchmedial, who made the comment during her contribution to the Budget debate this morning in Parliament.

She accused the Government of intellectual laziness, insisting that their only plan to treat with the explosive crime situation was to deny bail and blame the Opposition UNC for their lack of support in this area.

She said that persons are supposed to enjoy a reasonable right to bail and the presumption of innocence.

She accused the PNM Government of breaking up homes, by seeking to do this and keeping children from fathers who would be stuck in the prison system whether or not they were guilty of a crime.

She also accused the Government of allowing guns into the country which significantly contributes to crime.

She said in November 2022 from January to August of that year customs only did manual examinations of 3998 containers out of 23, 000 that entered the country.

She stated this was because of a lack of sufficient scanners and manpower.

The UNC Senator said instead of dealing with this obvious inefficiency the Gov’t chose to blame the US for the problem of guns in T&T.
