Kamla says Erla’s tenure as CoP should be addressed

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher has been a failure, but the Prime Minister and National Security minister must shoulder some blame.

Speaking in an interview with GML, Persad-Bissessar said that Harewood-Christopher’s tenure should be addressed.

She told the media house: “Well, the two points there that arise, Prime Minister Rowley has been in charge of the National Security Council for going on nine years now and indeed, the top cop’s tenure in office is depended on Cabinet approval and renewing that contract from her to stay on. So this is like her report card, her performance has been very poor, is true we accept that, but her job couldn’t have been easy with the most incompetent Minister of National Security that is Minister Hinds as a line minister.”

According to her, both Rowley and the National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds have to shoulder the blame for the crime situation as well, because they are the policymakers who guide what the CoP does.

“We cannot just say that Madame Christopher badly performed, she has two persons in charge and an NSC, obviously they have totally failed as well,” she noted.

Persad-Bissessar said the Police Service Commission must also answer how they feel about Harewood-Christopher’s performance because they picked her in the first place.

“We repeatedly called out the incompetence of the PSC and they must answer, how did they choose her,” she said.
