Griffith: Opposition Leader’s recent comments meant to help people protect themselves!

Gary Griffith says that unfortunately some would use Kamla Persad Bissessar’s recent controversial comments to serve their own interests.

Days after a female home-owner shot and killed an intruder at her Chaguanas home, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar is promising easier access to Firearms Users Licences (FULs) for law-abiding citizens after the UNC winds the next general elections.

And with this ease of access to legal firearms under a UNC government, she said at the party’s public meeting in Chaguanas on Monday that citizens should “light them up!”

Speaking with News Power Now this morning, Griffith said that he believes that Persad Bissessar was referring to the preservation of life of the licensed Firearm Holder.

He said that the point of using the weapon to defend oneself is to ensure that the threat to them is neutralized.

He explained if a criminal enters the property of a homeowner, the homeowner would seek to shoot the criminal in the head or chest, continuing to shoot until the threat is neutralized, so the criminal does not get the opportunity to kill the homeowner and this is what he believes Persad Bissessar was speaking to when she made her comments on lighting criminals up.

He said the real focus should be placed on amending existing laws that protect the criminals and penalize the licensed firearm holder.

He explained that it was separate and apart from stand your ground laws.
