Elderly pedestrian killed in early morning accident in Macoya

Police are making a public plea for the driver of a vehicle to surrender to authorities, following a hit-and-run accident in Macoya this morning (Wednesday 29 May, 2024) which claimed the life of a 70-year-old man.

The deceased has been identified as Wayne Richards.

Reports state that Richards was attempting to cross the east bound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near the Macoya Traffic lights around 1:55am, when he was struck by a vehicle that was proceeding along the highway.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and dragged Richards some 10 feet.

The driver then sped away from the scene.

Persons who witnessed the incident notified the police.

However, Richards died on the scene.

The body was viewed by a district medical officer and ordered removed from the scene.

CCTV footage from cameras placed along the highway is expected to be examined today to identify the vehicle and the driver in the accident.
