Dr Faith B. Yisreal says respiratory illneses, including Covid 19, causing increased hospitalisations in T&T

Respiratory illnesses are causing increasing hospitalisations in Trinidad and Tobago.

This is according to Secretary of Health, Wellness and Social Protection in Tobago Dr. Faith B.Yisrael.

She says that in addition to the Covid 19 virus there are a number of respiratory pathogens that have been causing an increase in hospitalisations.

Speaking on the Tobago Update Program this morning she said that it is the co-circulation of the various illness that has been causing concern among health care professionals.

She said the holiday period last year would have allowed for freedom of movement between this country and other international territories that have been struggling with the same issue on a grander scale.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned about the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses in the Region of the Americas, including the Caribbean just last week.

PAHO said its epidemiological update provides “recommendations for maintaining surveillance of these viruses and strengthening health systems response, particularly given the current outbreaks of other communicable diseases.”
