Disney, Paramount+ and Netflix in bidding war for Idris Elba’s Cooking Show

In his acting career, Idris Elba has played tough characters such as Stringer Bell, a drug kingpin in “The Wire” and a no-nonsense DCI in “Luther.”

But he is now turning to something quite soft: he wants to start a cooking show with him as the chef! Disney Paramount+ and Netflix are already falling over each other for the rights to air the show, which is yet to go into production. In the new series, the actor plans to explore his roots. He will be seen exploring his past and family’s heritage and culture.

Idris has not yet decided where he wants the show to be, so Netflix, Disney and Paramount+ are free to continue fighting over him. A source has revealed that although the 50-year-old actor and his production company signed a first-look deal with Apple TV+, he can still “take the show elsewhere.”

“He has a first-look deal with Apple TV+ and his production company Green Door Pictures but he can take the show elsewhere. Idris is a perfectionist and he will want everything to be just right before he decides who to go with,” the source added.

Idris has been busy of late. He received an honorary doctorate at Ravensbourne University London just last week. The school was marking its annual graduation ceremony, where 800 students in the creative and digital industries graduated.

In his address to the students, the actor highly praised education.

“Education is the exact foundation that I am standing on here today,” he said. “Because of my education, I got to go places that I never even dreamed of going to. I wanted to be in the creative arts because I wanted to contribute, I wanted to have a seat at the table, I wanted to have someone that looked like me, to have something to offer, and my education prepared me for that.”

“Ravensbourne stands for the very same values, putting skillsets in students and giving them an opportunity to have a seat at the table forever. So many amazing students have come from here and are still contributing. The truth is the learning always continues. I am super proud of this, because it’s an honour, but also, now, you lot can call me Doctor Dris.”
