Business Assoc. Collectively Withdraw From The Confederation of Regional Business Chambers

Arima Business Association, Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce, The Greater Tunapuna Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce, San Juan Business Association, Trinidad and Tobago Petroleum Dealers Association, the Petroleum Dealers Co-operative Society and the Sangre Grande Chamber of Commerce has announced that we are no longer members of the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers (CRBC).

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Associations said the views expressed by the CRBC do not represent the views of individual organisations.

It added that while groups with similar aims working together is a concept that is supported, a collective decision was made to withdraw from CRBC as it does not align with the goals and objectives of the respective organisations.

A subsequent disclaimer was issued the by San Juan Business Association “SJBA” which ‘confirmed and reiterated’ its withdrawal from the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers.

The statement also noted that Vivek Charran is not its President and does not represent the views of SJBA. The current President of our Association is Mr. Jason Roach.

The disclaimer went on to say, it has now become necessary to further clarify these points as a matter of ethics and professionalism.

The reasons for withdrawal and disclaimer on Mr. Charran are as follows;

  • An Infringement on SJBA constitution regarding a conflict of interest.
  • The non-approval of our Board of Directors regarding joining any umbrella organization or confederation, namely CRBC.
  • The flawed democratic process in electing and appointing a Chairman of CRBC. It is understood that such a Chamber Chairman should be a sitting member of a Business Chamber or Association. It must be noted that the current Chairman of CRBC does not belong to any Chamber or Association.
  • The conduct of CRBC Chairman in consulting then members and specifically, the morality in being open and transparent with and in the media in relation to who he represents.

The Association claimed there is a clear and deliberate attempt to malign the reputation of San Juan Business Association as well as to disrespect past associate members of the Confederation. In light of this, SJBA will not be held responsible or liable for any statement made by the Chamber of Regional Business Chambers or its Chairman.
