7 officers held for extortion released: $250k bail for the other 2

Two police officers, identified as Inspector Ramlakhan and PC Smith, have been charged with misbehaviour in public office by misappropriation of more than $12,000.

The two were among nine officers investigated by the Professional Standards Bureau of the T&T Police Service, into allegations of extortion of various business owners in the Eastern Division.

However, while those two were charged, the seven other officers were released pending further investigations.

Inspector Ramlakhan and PC Smith appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Cheron Raphael yesterday.

Ramlakhan was represented by Pamela Elder, SC, while Seana Baboolal appeared for Smith. They were each placed on $250,000 bail with surety and their cases were adjourned to September 26th.

The seven other officers initially arrested in connection with the case were released after pre-action protocol letters for writ of habeas corpus were sent to the Commissioner of Police by their respective attorneys.
