6 guards, 5 prisoners injured following altercation at POS jail

A “skirmish” at the Port of Spain jail, also known as the Royal Gaol has left 11 individuals injured and hospitalised.

The altercation involved prison officers and inmates at the jail on Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain.

The incident took place at around 11 am today.

Reports indicate an officer was escorting a high-risk prisoner back to his cell after he received medical attention, and that the prisoner allegedly refused to follow instructions and began engaging the officer in a volatile manner.

Several other inmates rushed to the prisoner’s aid, which led to a physical fracas.

An alarm was raised within the prison walls, and other officers then rushed to assist their colleague as they sought to quell the situation.

Following the incident, 11 people—including six prison officers and five inmates—were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (POSGH) for medical attention, where they were all treated for minor injuries.
