Vehicle crashes and explodes near Gasparillo overpass; 2 people escape

Two people are thankful to be alive today, after the vehicle they were in exploded in Gasparillo.

Around 5am, Michael Morgan, 40, of Upper St Francois Valley Road, Belmont was driving his Mitsubishi Mirage south along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, with Ariel James, 22, of Old Road Morvant as his front seat passenger.

However, on reaching near the Gasparillo Overpass, the vehicle skidded, then slammed into several of the crash barriers on the western side of the southbound carriageway.
Witnesses said the posts sent the car into a tailspin and it hit a concrete pillar on the west of the southbound flyover.

Both occupants were able to crawl out of the wreck before it burst into flames.

Fire officers arrived a short while later and extinguished the fire.

Morgan and James are now warded in serious conditions at the San Fernando General Hospital.
