Three Entities Can Conduct Interceptions Of Private Communications

The law provides for the three entities to conduct interceptions of private communications.

They are the Commissioner of Police, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Strategic Services Agency.

Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, provided the information in the Senate on Tuesday.

It came in response to a question from the Opposition which asked to the Minister to confirm today’s newspaper reports that a specialized intelligence gathering unit attached to the Special Branch of the TTPS has the capacity to carry out the interception of private communications.

The Opposition also asked the government to provide the legal authority of the Research and Analytical Unit of the TTPS to engage in widespread surveillance and interception of citizens’ devices.

In response Minister Hinds made it known who are legitimately able to do such interceptions.
