Prisoner found hanging at Maximum Security Prison

A Guyanese national who was an inmate at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP), in Arouca, has been found dead.

Basil Gobin, 49, of Naparima Mayaro Road, Rio Claro, was found hanging in his cell by his cellmate around 4:20pm on Tuesday, 13th July.

Gobin was committed for murder on January 14th, 2010, and was to be sentenced today, July 14th, 2021,

The cellmate alerted a prison officer who, upon entering cell 290 located on Division A on the southern side of the MSP, reportedly saw Gobin in a kneeling position with what appeared to be a braided, cream-coloured piece of cloth wrapped around his eyes. Gobin appeared to be motionless and unresponsive.

The officer then informed the Prisons Infirmary Officer and upon his arrival at the scene, the Infirmary officer checked the prisoner and noted barely perceptible pulse and breathing activity.

The prisoner was then taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 pm.

Investigations are ongoing.
