Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is working on the necessary law in order to make a special offence for home invasions.
Speaking at the United National Congress (UNC) Monday night forum last night, Persad-Bissessar told supporters that she is working on a Private Bill to bring before Parliament, in order to get separate legislation for home invasions.
She said we are fast approaching Haiti with the crime and criminality that’s taking place and she is calling on citizens to get up, stand up and be counted.
“When you get up on social media…go out and say something, say we want this government to go and this government must go now, call the elections.
“I have been busy drafting a piece of law together with the help of some of our lawyers. We are drafting a private member’s bill that I will take to Parliament on your behalf to fight the home invasions in our country. Stand your ground law, increasing the penalties for home invasions.
“I cannot think of anything more terrifying that bandits invading your home…you see your wife being raped, what can you do? I say we must pass the law to make a special offence for home invasions. We must give right thinking citizens, qualified citizens, the right to bear arms…so you could protect your family…in the castle of your home. So I’m asking you to give us support for us to pass the law for stand your ground…and then we’re talking about that special penalty for home invasion with 25 years in jail. Third, give law-abiding citizens who qualify and apply, the right to get a firearm’s license.”
