Muhammad on Roget’s “young black males” statement: Depends on how you view the info

Sociology Lecturer and Author Dr David Muhammad says it’s more of a question of whether you believe the statement or not.

He was at the time commenting on statements made by JTUM Head Ancil Roget that “young black males” are the chief perpetrators of crime in this country.

He told the Power Breakfast Show on Power 102 Digital this morning that while he does not know the context in which the comments by the JTUM Leader were made, it is a layered conversation.

He said the main concern with crime is not so much the quantity of isolated incidents but the magnitude of the impact and devastating effect that it has on society.

By way of example he said smaller crimes may be committed by several black males however larger crimes may be committed by fewer males within a different social characterization. This he says puts a different spin on whether the young black males are really the problem.

He said that there is a level of sensationalism in the media when it comes to crime reporting.

He referred to a course that he taught on criminology and a unit that dealt with reasons for low visibility on white colour crime.
