Minaj opens up about her struggles with sobriety and being happy

Just like millions of people, Nicki Minaj has also struggled with sobriety issues.

The Trini-born Queens rapper recently opened up to all 24.9 million of her Twitter followers by explaining how she moved on from her use of marijuana as a coping mechanism and, in turn, has grounded herself and found a source of natural joy, free of stimulants.

“I used to be happy when I was high,” Nicki wrote in part. “Now I’m happy when I’m sober. No judgment to anyone. Be gentle with yourself.”

She continued, remarking on how her past lifestyle choices still linger in this new chapter of her life, partly due to genetic factors that are out of her control.

“My eyes naturally look like that and ppl always think I’m high when I’m not wearing makeup,” Nicki said.

The multi-platinum rapper-turned-mother has transformed into a nurturing, and self-reflective guardian since the birth of her son Papa in September 2020.

Last May, while she was apparently reflecting on her past she shared several of her old mugshot photo on Instagram in a quick post-and-delete memorial commemorating her growth as a woman who was born and bred in Queens.

“It took me years to be able to look at things like this,” Nicki Minaj wrote in the since-deleted caption. “Criminal possession with the intent to use. I did use it tho. This is so inspiring to look back. The girl was leaking blood and spent days in the hospital. The word on the street was that I was gonna b deported. I was so scared. LOL. I was ‘on the run.’ I rlly thought I was in a ghetto movie. I hid my car and went to stay with my Aunt in Brooklyn chile. Bwahahahaaaa. #Growth.”
