Man arrested after robbing gas station and leaving his bank card at the scene

A Florida man is under arrest after police say he stole dog food from a gas station and left his debit card with his name on it at the scene of the crime.

Police responded to an alarm at a gas station in Palm Coast, Florida in the early hours of the morning, and found the front door of the business unlocked.

After searching the gas station, deputies found a debit card with the name Lantz Kurtz sitting on the counter near a register.

Security camera footage showed a man entering the store from the back and stealing several items before unlocking the front door and walking out.

Police say they recognized Kurtz from a nearby incident earlier in the night in which he was forced to park at the side of the road after his vehicle caught fire while driving.

Officers returned to the vehicle and found Kurtz waiting there. He admitted to officers that he broke into the gas station and took dog food, antifreeze, cigarettes and a smoking device but said left his debit card behind so that he could come back and pay for the items.

He told police it was intentional so that the store owners knew his name adding that he didn’t want to steal anything but the place was closed so he couldn’t pay for it at the time.

Kurtz even tried to school the officers pointing out that taking something without intending to pay for it is theft…and that’s against the law adding “I don’t know if they teach you guys that”.

The Sheriff was having none of it however telling the media that “…leaving a debit card behind does not absolve you from theft or committing a burglary…”.

Kurtz was arrested and charged with armed burglary of a dwelling/structure and petty theft and was released on a $10,000 bond.
