Doctor cautions that amputations puts strain on families and the health care system

Amputations can put a strain of families, a country’s healthcare system and affect the quality of life according to medical doctor, Richard Mann.

He said from information available relating to the Caribbean, about one percent of all diabetics have a lower extremity amputation, this refers to the removal of a piece of the toe, foot or leg, while those above the ankle is also a  significant amount on yearly basis.

Dr Mann said in terms of Trinidad and Tobago the figure is in the vicinity of 150,000 persons affected by diabetes.

He also reviewed the implications and complications which can arise when there are amputations adding it reduces an individual’s ability to work, socialise and exercise.

He said it also has an impact on the patient’s emotions.

Solutions and advice were also offered on how to improve a person’s health care.
