Chief Justice reveals how the pandemic has benefitted the courts

Chief Justice Ivor Archie says a change in philosophy and culture is necessary for the transformation of the judiciary.

He made the comment during his address to commemorate the Opening of the 2021-2022 Law Term of the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice emphasized the need for a transition to a modern customer centric institution; something he said was forcibly embarked upon earlier than planned due to the COVID pandemic.

In noting the impact of the COVID pandemic on the court system, he claimed that there have been benefits.

He pointed to an increase in the number of other matters being addressed before the courts as a result of the switch to digital courtrooms.

However, he noted that the inverse occurred in the criminal justice system with fewer criminal matters heard within the last year.
