Kamla Persad Bissessar: Unite In Removing “Darkness” From Our Nation

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar has called on citizens, on the occasion of Diwali, to pledge to unite and work together to remove darkness from the nation, referring to the ills plague society.

She noted joy amongst the community to be able to celebrate the Festival of Light with a sense of normalcy, having endured two years of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mrs Persad Bissessar claims, however, that in the midst of this joy the nation is sadly shrouded in darkness, being faced with increasing poverty, an out-of-control crime problem, and what she describes as an uncaring administration that has now been exposed as a corrupt and villainous regime.

Remaining optimistic, Mrs Persad Bissessar pointed out that even in the darkest of times it is important to remember, “if the light of one deya can dispel the darkness around it, what a bright light we can create if we unite to fight against the dark forces around us.”

Mrs Persad Bissessar’s statement reads in full:

Sita Ram.

Today, as families across Trinidad and Tobago and all over the globe gather to celebrate Diwali, I am mindful of the simple message of the festival, that light will always overcome darkness; hope will conquer despair.

I offer warm Diwali greetings to our entire nation because regardless of our cultural background, today is a special day for our multicultural nation when we join our Hindu friends to honour the victory of good conquering evil.

I know that many of our citizens are happy to be able to once again celebrate the Festival of Light with a sense of normalcy, as we have all endured two years of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For me, my family and my UNC family, it has been wonderful being able to pray together, prepare our delicious food and sweets, and help our brothers and sisters in need.  I have seen my fellow citizens throughout this country demonstrate the humanity, humility and generous spirit that makes us Trinbagonians.

In the midst of this joy, however, our beloved nation is sadly shrouded in darkness, as we face increasing poverty, an out-of-control crime problem, and an uncaring administration that has now been exposed as a corrupt and villainous regime.

The Opposition will continue to shine a light on their dark deeds, and we will continue to hold this Government to account.

I know that the divine light burns powerfully in the hearts of our citizens. Together, united, we can bring our country out of this darkness.

Even in the darkest of times, remember that if the light of one deya can dispel the darkness around it, what a bright light we can create if we unite to fight against the dark forces around us.

May this auspicious occasion of Diwali illuminate all our lives with joy, health and prosperity.

Shubh Diwali!
