Walker calls on Kamla to step down as UNC leader

Marsha Walker, the United National Congress'(UNC) candidate for Glencoe/Goodwood/La Puerta in the 2023 Local Government Elections, is calling on the party’s political leader to step down.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Walker warned Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar she is ‘at risk of ruining her legacy’ if she doesn’t step down as political leader of the political party.

Walker, who recently resigned as the party’s Diego Martin West coordinator, following a disagreement with the selection of another UNC official, wrote on social media:
“I love you Kamla Persad-Bissessar, I really do. I think you have given your entire life to this country, I think you’ve served better than many.”

Walker pointed out that many athletes go on to ruin their legacies because they refuse to leave the game while they’re on top.

She then urged Persad-Bissessar, out of nothing but love, to not risk ruining her own legacy.

Walker added: “I can see you doing a tour telling your story and inspiring others to serve. I for one would love to sit and listen to how you managed a home and a country all at once. I’d love for you to open up to women, tell us how you rose to the top in a man’s world. Not many women can do that and even fewer can boast of doing it with their family intact.”

Walker first publicly appeared on the UNC’s platform in 2020 where she contested the Diego Martin West seat unsuccessfully. She received 2,569 votes to Dr. Keith Rowley’s 10,791 votes. In the recent Local Government Elections, she contested the District of Glencoe/Goodwood/La Puerta, gaining 799 votes, losing to the PNM’s Amber Caine, who received 1,132 votes.

Walker maintains that despite the fallout, she remains a member of the UNC.
