18-year-old among three detained for possession of protected animals

Road checks carried out in the Manzanilla district on Sunday night led to the arrest of one and the confiscation of five protected animals.

Police reported around 9 pm on Sunday, officers of the Manzanilla Police Post were on road check duty along the Eastern Main Road, Manzanilla.

The police had cause to stop a silver Nissan Tiida with three occupants, a 37-year-old, 18-year-old from Cunupia and a 31-year-old known as “No-No” of Ortoire Village, Mayaro.

The occupants were ordered out of the vehicle and police carried out a search inside the vehicle.

The officers found one blue and gold Macaw, three orange winged parrots and two red footed tortoises.

The 31-year-old of Ortoire who claimed to be the owner of the animals, was arrested and taken to the Manzanilla Police Post where he was charged by PC Harrinanan for three counts of possession of protected animals.
