Zipline project must be completed

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, said he wants to see the much talked about zipline project for Tobago completed.

And, he has appealed to PNM Tobago Council leader Tracy Davidson-Celestine to ensure that this is so, once she is elected Chief Secretary after the January 25 THA election.

At a PNM meeting at the Cyd Gray Complex in Roxborough on Wednesday evening, Dr Rowley said “I staunchly support the idea of a zipline. That will be a marketing idea that can compare with the Buccoo Reef as a marketing experience.”

He dismissed the controversy surrounding the stalled project, stating that it was approved by the THA and will have tremendous benefits for Tobago.

The zipline project was initiated by former tourism secretary Davidson-Celestine, in 2015, at a cost of $2.5 million but has yet to get off the ground.

Despite the considerable cost, as revealed by a 2016 auditor general management letter, the THA only has a rope to show for the project.

PDP’s Farley Augustine has been using the zipline project collapse as his main election attack against the PNM.

He claims the budget for the project was $4 million and the reported spend on the project turns out to be $3.5 million and not $2.5 million as stated.
