Young: Gov’t confident discussions with US officials on energy matters will hold strong

Government admits while it cannot predict the future and there is risk involved, it is remaining confident discussions entered into with democrats, republicans and public servants in America relating to energy matters will hold strong even if the current administration changes in the upcoming US election.

The optimism comes from Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Stuart Young, while being interviewed on the Power Breakfast Show this morning.

He said during deliberations with the US government certain commitments were given relating to the license granted to the Trinidad and Tobago government on October 17, 2023 by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Department of Treasury of the United States with respect to the development of the Dragon Gas Field.

The license granted to government expires on October 31, 2025 and amongst other things, permits the state to negotiate with the Government of Venezuela and PDVSA to obtain exploration and production licences to extract natural gas, to operate the Dragon field and to make various payments associated with such a project including, taxes, royalties, fees and lease bonus payments.

Minister Young said the matter has not become a political football and is hoping this position remains that way and the necessary ground work has been done
