Yellow Level flood alert in place for South Trinidad

South Trinidad is currently under a Yellow Level Localised Flood Alert until 9 pm today.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) is advising that heavy rainfall and already saturated soils will continue to lead to flooding in some areas in South Trinidad, due to filled drains, small water courses and localised ponding.

There have already been reports of flooding in Coalmine Sangre Grande, Claxton Bay, Barrackpore, Williamsville, and parts of the East West Corridor.

Today is expected to see cloudy to overcast conditions with frequent showers and periods of rain in broad areas. Forecasters say there is a 90% (very high) chance of occasional thunderstorms, particularly over the southern half of Trinidad. Gusty winds and street/flash flooding may occur in the vicinity of heavy showers or thunderstorms.

The Met Service says improvement is expected in northern areas by early afternoon, with central and southern areas becoming settled by late afternoon and into the evening. Tonight, weather conditions will be fair despite a few showers.

As consequence, the TTMS warns against taking unnecessary risks and says citizens must avoid driving or wading through flood waters.
