Works Minister defends decision to issue driver’s permits

Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan is defending the decision to transition from issuing driver permits to issuing drivers licences and as a result the money spent to facilitate this change.

He responded to the argument that the money could have been better spent repairing the nation’s roads.

He explained that in other countries a permit is issued to persons who are learning to drive while a license is issued to persons who are qualified to drive.

Apart from problems that may be encountered by persons who are holders of TT permits in countries where that rule applies he noted the new license is a technological upgrade.

He also says that it removes some of the bureaucracy.
