The Minister of Works and Transport and the Attorney General have been directed by the Prime Minister to create a system to control ‘PH’ drivers.
Following a debate in Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley revealed that this country needs a system of authority and control to be able to exclude undesirable elements.
He said: “We need a system that permits, identifies and approves who can ply a vehicle for hire. Some system that is enforceable.”
The PM’s directive follows the murder of teenager Ashanti Riley of San Juan. The teen went missing after boarding a PH taxi and was found murdered four days later.
A Certificate of Good Character is required to obtain a taxi badge. However, PH taxi drivers can be anyone with a vehicle, that decides to take up a route.
