Work begins on installation of GOES-16 satellite receiving ground station

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has announced that work has started for the installation of the GOES-16 satellite receiving ground station at the Synoptic Branch, Piarco, Trinidad.

A statement from the TTMS said the new project is being conducted by engineers from Enterprise Electronic Corporation (EEC), USA.

It said the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 16, now known as GOES-East, is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R) series.

The TTMS explained that the GOES-16 satellite is equipped with advanced sensors that provide high-resolution images and real-time data.

“The ground station will allow the TTMS to receive real-time data directly from the satellite, reducing reliance on third-party data providers.”

“This satellite will play a pivotal role in enhancing the TTMS understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere, monitoring severe weather events, and providing critical data for weather forecasting, climate research, and disaster management, and other scientific endeavors,” the TTMS noted.
