Vision on Mission CEO says children should be be deterred from gang membership

Chief Executive Officer of the non-governmental group, Vision on Mission, Giselle Chance, is suggesting more focus be placed on early childhood and youth based interventions to help make gang membership and crime participation less attractive.

The CEO of Vision of Mission made the recommendation in response to a question at the ninth sitting of the Joint Select Committee on National Security today.

The JSC inquired into strategies to combat the prevalence of organized criminal gangs in Trinidad and Tobago with a special focus on measures implemented to identify vulnerable youth and early intervention.

Former Prisons Commissioner, Gerald Wilson, said there is need to have closer interaction with young people to hear their concerns and challenges.

Meanwhile, Director of Eye on Dependency, Garth St Clair, suggested there be an increase in the number of safety officers in schools.
