Venezuela to Purchase 10 Million Doses of Russian COVID-19 Vaccine

The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, has announced that he will buy 10 million vaccines of the Sputnik V coronavirus from the Government of Russia.

“The Bolivarian Government guaranteed 10 million vaccinations for the Venezuelan people, aftre the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, held a meeting with representatives of the vaccine Sputnik V in Moscow, Russia ”, said the president during an activity with his government team broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión.

According to the president, the main objective of his ministers’ trip to Russia was “to achieve the agreements for the vaccine.”

“We are going to guarantee the production of the vaccine and the safe supply starting in January,” said the Venezuelan vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, present at the event.

The Venezuelan Government confirmed since March, when the pandemic reached the country, 96,933 infections and 848 deaths. The figures are questioned by the opposition and non-governmental organizations, considering that there is a high under-registration.

At the beginning of October, the Caribbean country received a shipment from the vacuna rusa Sputnik V in order to participate in the clinical trials phase, in which some 2,000 volunteers collaborate, including Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of the Chavista ruler.

Russia became the first country in August to register a vaccine against COVID-19, which it named Sputnik V in honor of the first satellite launched into space in 1957. However, the announcement was met with skepticism in the international community.
