UWI Seismic Research Centre records change in Dominica Boiling Lake

Water levels at the Boiling Lake, Dominica, have changed significantly in recent days.

UWI Seismic Research Centre recored the phenomenon which it states has occurred several times since 1876 with the last occurring in Nov 2021-May 2022.

The centre said the changes in the water levels and activity at the Boiling Lake are not necessarily related to increased volcanic activity in the area.

The UWI-SRC and the ODM – Office of Disaster Management, Dominica are the official sources of information on volcanic activity in Dominica and continue to monitor and will provide any necessary updates.

“The Boiling Lake is a volcano-hydrothermal feature located in an area next to the Valley of Desolation in southern Dominica. The lake is roughly 60m in diameter and approximately 15m deep.

The Boiling Lake is the second largest feature of its kind in the world with the largest being Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand. The Valley of Desolation and the Boiling Lake itself are considered sites of interest for locals and visitors to Dominica. They have been part of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.”
