UTT workers’ termination sad but necessary

It was an unfortunate but necessary decision that UTT had to make when they terminated 199 non-academic workers.

Education Minister Anthony Garcia

Education Minister Anthony Garcia said the move was done as a way to save the University. He acknowledged that the staff may be traumatised by the loss of their jobs but he advised that they should seek new employment. Garcia made these comments after news broke yesterday that the employees were given termination letters, following one-on-one meetings with several heads of units. Garcia said the workers will be given 45 days notice, and also allowed to seek new jobs elsewhere.

Sources indicate that Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union president general Ancel Roget warned workers of termination a month ago, informing them that they would be the first batch to be retrenched.
