USC intends to target students abroad, in light of gov’ts defunding of GATE and post grad studies

In light of government’s cuts to GATE and the scholarship programmes, the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) in St Joseph said that it will be improving its marketing strategy and try to target students outside of T&T.

USC President Dr Hilary Bowman, said: “Folks in T&T have had an expectation that education is free and it’s going to take them some time to come to grips with the whole idea that – listen, there’s no such thing as free education.”

Bowman, speaking to GML, said the reality of not being assisted by the government will take some time to settle in the minds of prospective postgraduate students.

However, he argued that the discontinued government sponsorship of postgraduate studies would not only impact on research and development, but it would also impact the economy as well, by the lack of data that could be gleaned from research and subsequently used in the marketplace.
