UPDATE: Wife held for the murder of Maritime Chairman

A 41-year-old woman reportedly the wife of Maritime Chairman, Maritime Financial Group John Smith, 74, is currently assisting Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) detectives regarding the death of her husband which occurred yesterday.

At 4.30 pm on Friday July 23rd, officers of the Maraval Police Station responded to a distress call in which it was reported to police that there was a domestic dispute at a residence in Catalina Courts, Saddle Road, Maraval.

Upon their arrival, first responders allegedly observed the woman lying next to a man who appeared to be motionless. The woman reportedly made certain utterances which arose the officers’ suspicion who later arrested her pending further investigations.

Detectives from the HBI Region One, who took lead of the investigation, are currently interrogating the suspect at the Central Police Station, Port-of-Spain.

The woman’s husband, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s (TTPS) Victims and Witness Support Unit is also providing counselling and intervention at this time, as the ordeal is said to have occurred in the view of two minors.

PC Martin, of the HBI Region One, is continuing investigations.
