UNC retains Debe South seat

The local government seat of Debe South has been retained by the United National Congress as its candidate Khemraj Seecharan emerged victorious at Monday’s by-election.

Preliminary results have Seecharan receiving 1,650 of the ballots cast.

Lorenzo Rodney Sammy of the Progressive Empowerment Party collected 175 votes, with 25 going in favour of Judy Sookdeo of the People’s National Movement.

The by-election became necessary after the death of  local government councillor Purushottam Singh on February 14 last year, left the seat vacant.

Giving his victory speech at the UNC’s campaign office, Seecharan put the PNM on notice as he said the election result was a taste of what’s to come.

Seecharan thanked his supporters on the ground, including the family of the late Purushottam Singh, who was the district’s elected representative up until his passing in February 2021.
