UNC MP raises concerns over full time councillors

St Augustine MP and former Local Government councillor Khadijah Ameen has commented on the proposal that being a councillor should be made a full time job.

She said there are pros and cons but it will ultimately be a personal decision.

However Ms Ameen noted that it may deter some persons who may be professionals such as lawyers or doctors as they risk losing income and damaging their career as they will have to rebuild their practice.

The former councillor noted that while improved salaries is a benefit, she expressed some concern with the role of the Finance Minister in the determination of salaries.

She called instead for a job analysis to be done to determine the applicable salary range for Local Government Councillors.
