UNC leader says Ragbir will be afforded “due process”

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says MP Dr Rai Ragbir will be afforded “due process” after he voted with government in favour of the Whistleblower Protection Bill in Parliament.

Following the incident on Friday, Dr Ragbir was quoted as saying that while he knows his colleagues would be disappointed, he believes the legislation would benefit the country.

Speaking last night in Chaguanas, shortly after swearing in the UNC’s new National Executive, Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the party’s leadership is yet to caucus on the matter.

However, she said there are procedures outlined in the party’s constitution that will attend to the matter and assured that it would be treated with fairly.

Mrs Persad-Bissessar further explained that the Cumuto/Manzanilla MP will be allowed a hearing and the chance to account for his actions.

Persad-Bissessar said the party has voted in a democratic election and is now focused on the upcoming general election.

She reiterated that MPs who supported the other slate in the internal are welcome to continue working and their future actions will determine their paths forward.

“I have no interest in engaging in any bacchanal with anyone. I have seen this before with previous persons who were rejected by the membership where they become bitter and turn against the UNC membership,” she said.

Persad-Bissessar said further that it was only human if a member is hurt and angry about the results.

However, she said invoking God, morals, values and country-first narratives does not fool anyone.

The UNC leader further called for healing and unity as she noted that under her tenure this was the sixth consecutive internal election, which she described as the “most destructive” campaign waged by any slate.

She said the elections are over and it is time to move forward.
