UN human rights groups want probe into death of Venezuelan toddler

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNICEF has expressed deep sadness over the death of a baby at the hands of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG).
By the TTCG’s accounts, the vessel, which was carrying migrants, was intercepted at sea off the southeast coast of Trinidad on Sunday. The Coast Guard claimed that the boat attempted to ram its vessel leading to a shot being fired at the engine. The baby was injured and subsequently passed away while the mother was hospitalized. The TTCG added that it was unaware that migrants were on board as they were allegedly hiding at the time of the encounter.
The Joint Special Representative of the UNHCR and IOM for Venezuelan refugees and migrants, Dr Eduardo Stein, said they were deeply saddened by the tragedy.
The UNHCR noted that in the absence of safer avenues, many Venezuelan refugees and migrants are being forced to resort to risky sea and land crossings that have become even more complex as travel and health restrictions limit formal paths of entry.
