Two in court after robberies with a fake gun

Investigations have led to a young man and a teenager being charged for robbery with aggravation.

The charges stemmed from two separate incidents that reportedly occurred in Freeport earlier this month.

SHERVON LAZARUS, 18, of Calcutta Road, Freeport, was charged for incidents that occurred on November 12th and 16th, 2020.

The teen, also from Freeport, was charged for an incident that occurred on November 16th 2020. Both are expected to appear virtually at the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court today.

On November 12th 2020 around 1.40 pm, a suspect entered a mini- mart in Freeport. He allegedly pointed a firearm at the cashier and announced a robbery.

The suspect allegedly proceeded to take a quantity of phone cards valued at $238, a cell phone valued at $200 and a sum of cash from the day’s sales. He then escaped on foot.

On November 16th 2020 around 9.20 am, two suspects, one armed with a gun, entered a supermarket in Freeport and announced a robbery.

The suspects escaped after taking a quantity of phone cards valued at $50, three packs of cigarettes valued at $84, six 700 ml bottles of brandy valued at $2,100 and a quantity of cash.

Officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Calcutta Road, Freeport, on Wednesday 18th November, 2020. An imitation gun, believed to be used in the commission of the offences was found and seized.

The suspect was detained.

The exercise, which took place between the hours of 5.30 am and 7 am, was spearheaded by W/Sgt Rawlins, assisted by Ag Sgt Modeste.

It was conducted by officers of the Freeport Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Central Division Task Force (CDTF) Area South.

Freeport Police Station officers on patrol duty detained the second suspect later that day.
Identification parades were conducted yesterday and both were positively identified.
