TTPS: No breakthroughs in prison officer shooting last Wednesday

So far there have been no major breakthroughs regarding the case of the prison officer who was shot last Wednesday despite the recovery of two vehicles believed to have been used in the attack.

Prison officer Steve Phipps was shot and wounded during the attempted assassination on Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Sherwyn Bruce.

Phipps was discharged from hospital on Saturday and is said to be recovering at home at an undisclosed location.

He underwent emergency surgery following the shooting incident outside Bruce’s Barataria home.

Based on the incident Acting Commissioner of Prisons Deopersad Ramoutar confirmed yesterday that he is in talks with Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds on implementing a phone system in the nation’s prisons.

A 22-year-old suspect from La Canoa, Santa Cruz, remains in custody but is yet to give the police an official statement.

Media reports quote police sources as saying that a call came from behind bars to send a message and the motive stemmed from restrictions imposed on inmates recently and a crackdown on cell phones and use of jammers.

Speaking on the Power Breakfast Show on Monday morning Acting Commissioner of Prisons Ramoutar said that he had no evidence to support these claims.
