TTPS arming officers with pepper spray from November 23

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith has announced that come Monday, 23 November, all police officers will be armed with pepper spray.

Speaking at the TTPS Weekly Media Briefing today, Griffith said that it was promised over a year ago and the officers will now officially have the item to use.

Griffith warned citizens about the effects of the device and testing police with pepper spray, saying he experienced it during an exercise months ago and “it was not a nice feeling.”

He said the pepper spray will work in conjunction with tasers as part of the service’s minimum use of force policy.

Griffith asked the public to “please comply and then complain”.

He said “the pepper spray is not just for us to spray people, but we must have a minimum use of force policy in this country to ensure that police officers can be protected without the use of the firearm.
