T&TMA hopeful investigation into NICU deaths would prevent future occurrences

The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA) said it’s awaiting the outcome of the report on the investigation into the deaths of several babies at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

In a statement, the T&TMA said it’s advocating for the timely implementation of the report’s recommendations.

The association said it was disheartened by the news and acknowledged the negative impact on the families, as well as the healthcare workers involved.

The T&TMA said: “The care of neonates, especially those that are premature is a complex task with many factors to consider which include the risk of feeding problems, increase in infections and respiratory distress (breathing problems) among others.

The association added that it was hopeful that the investigation would prevent future occurrences of this nature.

“We hope this would help prevent the recurrence of a similar situation and encourage the public confidence in the NICU services across both islands,” the T&TMA said.
