T&T participates at World Trade Organization meeting on Fisheries Subsidies

Trinidad and Tobago takes part in international discussions which focused on advancing the negotiation of an agreement which seeks to limit harmful fisheries subsidies.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Paula Gopee-Scoon, led a delegation to participate in the World Trade Organization Trade Negotiations Committee Ministerial virtual meeting on Thursday.

WTO negotiations to reduce fishing subsidies commenced in 2001 and after 20 years, the aim of Member countries is to finalize an Agreement in 2021.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry says fishing that depletes fishing stocks, or is illegal, unreported and unregulated, negatively impacts ecological sustainability, food security, livelihoods, incomes and jobs.

It says the main contributors to the problem are countries that subsidize large scale industrial fishing vessels which engage in distant
water fishing.
