TT Chamber CEO Gabriel Faria: Business members Frustrated, Despondent & Disappointed after PM’s announcements

C.E.O. of the Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Industry & Commerce Gabriel Faria said many of the chamber’s membership are ‘frustrated, despondent & disappointed’ after Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley’s presentation of the phased removal of restrictions on Saturday. In an exclusive Interview with Izzso media Mr. Faria said its clear the government did not take a risk based approach to restarting the economy. He said when one looks as the list of ‘low risk’ businesses which could have been included especially since they generate employment, this was not the consideration:

He also said that different sub-committee’s of government’s recovery team reached out to the Chamber at different times and chamber members provided lists, protocols and suggestions for inclusion in the first phase, but it was clear that no one looked at these:

Mr. Faria said that he fielded calls and questions from members for up to two hours after the Prime Minister’s presentations because many members were left disappointed with ‘more questions than answers’:

He said many business owners were confused and unsure as to where they would be in the six ‘phases’ announced and in some instances because of the delayed reopening of many types of businesses and many may simply decide to close up shop. He also said we will see further unemployment, and the government has abdicated it’s responsibility to provide support to many small businesses:
