Within the spiritual core of each Trinbagonian, there is an unknown desire to awaken our Caribbean excellence, no matter the field or the obstacle.
Fyzabad native Jeweller, Josanne Mark, in a special issue – dedicated to the revolution of a new generation of talent in the fashion industry, coped the opportunity for her jewellery to be featured on the cover of British Vogue’s Magazine with international musician Dua Lipa.
Dubbing herself a ‘Country Girl’ Josanne, a graduate from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan in 2011 Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Jewellery Design became ecstatic at the offer by British Vogue.
She holds a first degree in Psychology and Human Resource Management, at the University of The West Indies. However, after graduating she searched for jobs in the field for several months but her zeal for corporate began to waver. This led her to begin creating beaded jewellery, “it was just for me and it was just a way to pass the time. It was just a hobby then” she said.
When asked about how she obtained the prestigious opportunity in an interview with blogger, Forward Forty, Mark boldly said it was a combination of bold choices with little money, luck and connections, that led her work to the right people in the fashion industry.
“I like to think of it in the way Oprah defines it: ‘where preparation meets opportunity’. A few years ago, during one of the frequent conversations I often have with myself I knew I had to have a website, something that was not just good, but something that was spectacular, one that compared to the big ticket designers. I decided to build it myself. I am certainly not a tech-savvy person. It was one of the most challenging things I have ever done in my lifetime but the self-talk that fueled my drive. Fast forward to two years later, I received an email from someone at British Vogue who found my website and thought that I was a good fit for their designer’s feature.” said Mark.
Additionally, she shared “We are all capable; tenacity and discipline are all it takes. Staying grounded and maintaining your sense of honesty, fairness and integrity is also important to success. My design philosophy is a truly panoptic one. I harmonize organic and geometric elements with bold textures, which results in a diverse design style. It’s unpredictable yet identifiable when you see a piece you know it’s mine.”
The Josanne Mark brand is built upon values of integrity, sustainability, eco and social consciousness. Of all industries, the Mining Sector is responsible for some of the largest releases of toxic substances into our environment and some of the gravest abuse of human rights.
