Trinidadian born singer, songwriter, record producer, and minister, and founder of the U.S. Dream Academy, Wintley Phipps sang “How Great Thou Art” at the funeral of former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell.
Powell known as a four-star general and as a onetime secretary of defense, was remembered at his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral Friday (Nov. 5) as a man of the Episcopal faith.
Powell, 84, died Oct. 18 at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center of COVID-19-related complications while battling a rare cancer and Parkinson’s disease.
For more than twenty-eight years, Phipps has traveled the world delivering messages of hope, advocacy, and equality to many thousands of people.
Meanwhile Twitter was abuzz when Phipps sang his soul out live in front of millions throughout the world –
This rendition of “How Great Thou Art” by the great Wintley Phipps (IMO the world’s greatest baritone) at Colin Powell’s memorial service made me want to shout “Hallelujah!” It is MAGNIFICENT. Amen! 🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/eLbmCvhMbT
